In the late 1990's, the AD 2000 movement formed a network of combined church prayer groups in the Illawarra. On Saturday June 19th 1999 a prayer launch for the Harvest 2000 outreach was held. Ross Holmes (an AOG pastor) was the prayer coordinator for the Greg Laurie Harvest 2000 crusade. The prayer meetings continued after Harvest 2000 as ecumenical prayer meetings under the name of the Illawarra Prayer Network. A few years later, Jeff Stacey took over as President of the informal prayer network which was run in association with "Reach Illawarra" and David Bartlett's "Illawarra Pastors Network".
The fortnightly Clearing the Way for Jesus email prayer letter commenced on 21/9/2005 with a distribution of 77 email addresses. In 2006, Jeff Stacey stood down as President and, in the absence of applicants for the position, Derek Thompson became the Coordinator. The prayer network joined Five Islands Christian Ministries to benefit from the mutual support, incorporation and charity status. The email distribution network has steadily grown to over 3,500 members.
Illawarra Interchurch Covenant
The Illawarra Interchurch Covenant (IIC) is an initiative of the Illawarra Prayer Network to help facilitate church unity. The IIC is based on the Australian Churches Covenanting Together document signed by 19 denominations. All Illawarra Christian churches are invited to participate in an interchurch covenant as an act of commitment to church unity in the Illawarra. The IIC and other information can be downloaded from the Resources page. Only four churches have signed an IIC to date, which shows how fragmented the church of Christ is in the Illawarra.
"The Prayer Mission" eBook
The Prayer Mission free eBook by Derek Thompson surveys the biblical teaching on prayer and draws a challenging conclusion: faith without prayer is dead. Prayer is the interaction with God that characterises the relationship between humanity and divinity. It is an integral and essential part of our life's mission on earth. The ebook can be downloaded for free from the Resources page.
without ceasing (1 Thes 5:17) is not just Paul's advice to
pray regularly but a challenge to live continually in God's presence.
Such a new habit of prayer takes time to form. Here is an eleven week
guided program to help you pray without ceasing: download.
The Clearing the Way for Jesus newsletter informs Christians of local prayer needs and combined church events. This is a free service and you can easily unsubscribe at any time. If you would like to receive our fortnightly newsletter, email me at email@example.com
